Phase notes
A week after new. Exactly half the face we see is lit, which is why the straight edge down the middle looks drawn with a ruler. It is called a quarter because the moon has finished a quarter of its orbit, not because a quarter of it is bright.
A clean half disc, highest in the sky around sunset and setting near midnight.

A phase is only the angle between the sun and the moon as we see it. This one sits at 90 degrees of that angle, a quarter of the way through a cycle that runs 29.53 days.
Crescent means less than half the disc is lit, gibbous means more than half, and the quarters are the two moments in between. The quarter names count orbit, not brightness - a first quarter moon looks like a half.
