Phase notes
A thin lit edge, growing. The sun is off to one side and catching only the rim of the disc we face. Anything under half lit and climbing is a waxing crescent, so this is the longest-running phase of the month.
A curved sliver low in the west after sunset, horns pointing away from the sun. The dark part is often faintly visible - earthshine, sunlight bounced off our own planet.

A phase is only the angle between the sun and the moon as we see it. This one sits at 45 degrees of that angle, an eighth of the way through a cycle that runs 29.53 days.
Crescent means less than half the disc is lit, gibbous means more than half, and the quarters are the two moments in between. The quarter names count orbit, not brightness - a first quarter moon looks like a half.
